About Norman Construction

Norman Construction (est. 1974) is a small, award-winning company of responsible, courteous, quality-oriented craftspeople who enjoy their work. We are full-service home remodeling specialists who take great pride not only in the work we do, but also in our relationship with the homeowners we serve. We are committed to creating for you the home or environment that best fits your needs and desires, with as little disruption to your life as possible.

We are firm believers that details matter. One detail we would like to share with you is our development over the years. Our history is what defines us; it shapes and molds us into what we are today. We are proud of our beginnings and are honored to be able to continue serving the Greater Spokane Area since 1974.

Jim Norman was born in Yakima and later moved to Spokane in 1961.

He started painting houses and doing fencing and landscaping while attending Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University. Jim painted all of the food shacks and vendor huts in Expo '74, also painted many new homes and commercial projects around Spokane.

Jim established Norman Construction in November 1974. Early years were spent doing a mix of framing and trimming out new houses and remodeling existing homes. By 1978 he specialized solely in residential and commercial remodeling.

Jim became a member of Spokane Home Builders Association in September 1990. Shortly thereafter in November, he was asked to help start the Remodelers' Council. Jim became chairman of the Council from 1991 to 1994. He received the award for SHBA Remodeler of the Year in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

Jim, his wife Melinda and Production Manager Bill Reilly became the first three Certified Graduate Remodelers in Spokane. From 1993 to 1995 Jim worked on the CGR Curriculum Development Working Group at NAHB. He was appointed to the National CGR Board of Governors from 1995 to 2000. As CGR Governors, Clai Porter and Jim developed the CGR Associate program that was introduced in Chicago in 1996. In April 1996 Jim was awarded the NAHB National Remodeler of the Month.

At the 1996 CGR Associate Launch in Chicago, IL, Jim congratulates Shawn Draper, from Anderson Windows, as one of the first graduates of the CGR Associate program.

In 1998 Jim had the privilege of serving as SHBA president. As president he initiated the SHBA website and installed the SHBA reader board and sign. During his year as president, Jim started a monthly meeting with the Spokane City Mayor to discuss topics and events important to the home building industry. He also asked to be appointed to the Spokane Area Economic Development Council Board of Trustees to further represent our industry.

At the Building Industry Association of Washington, Jim served as 1998 BIAW National Director and on the Executive Committee.

In 2019 Jim was inducted into the SHBA Hall of Fame.

48 years and counting, Norman Construction is still proudly remodeling in Spokane.
