Don’t you just hate it
when ants (not aunts) show up at the dinner table as
uninvited guests? How about when flies decide to use
your hamburgers as runways and your baked beans as
breeding grounds…it really bugs me out!
How
To Beat The Pants Off Those Ants:
Vinegar - Wash
countertops, cabinets, and floor with equal parts
vinegar and water to deter ant infestations.
Flour & Borax - Mix 1 cup flour and 2 cups borax in
a 1-quart plastic jug. Punch holes in the jug lid.
Sprinkle the contents around the house foundation.
Keep borax out of the reach of children and pets.
You can also use bone
meal, powdered charcoal and lemon. Set up barriers
where ants are entering. They will generally not
cross lines of bone meal or powdered charcoal. If
you can find a hole where ants are entering into
your house, squeeze the juice of a lemon in the hole
or crack. Then slice up the lemon and put the
peeling all around the entrance.
Spearmint,
Southern-wood, & Tansy - Growing these plants around
the border of your home will deter ants and the
aphids they carry.
Say Bye-bye To The Flies:
Prevention - Keep your kitchen garbage
tightly closed. You should also clean your garbage
cans thoroughly with detergent. After the cans are
washed and have dried, sprinkle dried soap and
borax. This will act as a fly repellent, they hate
that stuff!
Orange -
Scratch the skin of an orange and leave it out; the
citrus acts as a repellent.
Cloves - Hang
clusters of cloves to repel flies.
Mint or Basil -
Mint planted around the home repels flies. Keep
basil well watered from the bottom so that it
produces a stronger scent.
Sugar & Corn Syrup
- Make your own flypaper by boiling sugar, corn
syrup, and water together. Place the mixture onto
brown paper and hang or set out.
Mosquito Control:
Prevention - Encourage natural predators such
as dragonflies or praying mantises.
Eliminate -
Pools of stagnant water. Avoid wearing heavy
perfumes, bright colors, flowery prints, and bright
jewelry. These items attract mosquitoes.
Citronella -
Burn citronella candles to repel those nasty
buggers!
Tansy or Basil
- Plant tansy or basil around the patio and house to
repel mosquitoes.
